DSG gearbox repair

What is DSG?

DSG is a dual-clutch automatic transmission that combines the advantages of a manual and automatic transmission. It uses two clutches – one for even gears, the other for odd gears, ensuring very fast and smooth gear changes.

How is DSG repaired?

Repair requires accurate diagnostics and experience working with this technology:

  • Diagnostics – checks error codes, clutch operation, oil pressure.
  • Disassembly and troubleshooting – the clutch kit, mechatronics, and gears are checked.
  • Clutch replacement – a common failure after 100,000–150,000 km, especially for wet DSGs.
  • Mechatronics repair – control unit (electronics + hydraulics) inspection and repair.
  • Oil change – high-quality DSG oil is required.
  • Adjustment and final inspection – fine-tuning and testing of gearbox operation.

Most common problems:

  • Jerking at low revs
  • Slipping, delayed switching
  • Mechatronics damage (electronic/hydraulic)
  • Oil leaks or overheating
  • Uneven traction

Technical disadvantages:

  • Sensitive to city driving (frequent closing)
  • High maintenance costs
  • The complexity of mechatronics
  • Regular oil changes are required (every 60,000 km)

Which cars use DSG gearboxes?

  • Volkswagen (Golf, Passat, Tiguan)
  • Audi (A3, A4, Q5 – with S tronic name)
  • Skoda (Octavia, Superb)
  • SEAT (Leon, Ateca)

Approximate costs of DSG gearbox repair:

  • Clutch replacement: €800–1500
  • Mechatronics repair/replacement: €1200–2500
  • Full repair: €2000–3500
