Mercedes gearbox repair

Mercedes-Benz cars use the in-house developed and high-performance 7G-Tronic and 9G-Tronic classic automatic transmissions, as well as AMG Speedshift and, in some cases, ZF transmissions.

What gearboxes are used in Mercedes cars?

  • 5G-Tronic – older models (until 2006).
  • 7G-Tronic / 7G-Tronic Plus – E, C, S, ML, GL models.
  • 9G-Tronic – latest models (after 2014).
  • AMG Speedshift MCT/DCT – in sports models.
  • ZF 8HP – in some 4×4 or commercial vehicle models.

How is the repair going?

  • Diagnostics – uses Xentry or Star diagnostics for error and pressure checking.
  • Disassembly and troubleshooting – checks friction, valve block, solenoids, clutches.
  • Replacing friction and seals – they most often wear out under heavy load.
  • Valve block repair – a sensitive part when it comes to overheating or oil problems.
  • Oil change (ATF 134/236.14/236.17) – very important, high-quality original oil is required.
  • Adaptation and final testing – after repair, the gearbox is adapted to the car system.

The most common problems:

  • Kicks when switching
  • Delay or slippage
  • Oil leaks, overheating
  • Valve block and solenoid damage
  • AMG gearboxes – clutch wear

Technical disadvantages:

  • Sensitivity to oil quality and change frequency
  • High repair costs, especially in AMG models
  • Accurate diagnosis and adjustment required
  • Valve block problems at high temperatures

Approximate Mercedes gearbox repair costs:

  • Oil change (7G/9G-Tronic): €300–500
  • Valve block repair: €1000–1800
  • Friction and seal replacement: €1200–2000
  • Full overhaul (7G/9G-Tronic): €1800–3500
  • AMG Speedshift repair: €2,500–5,000+

If you feel a vibration, hear unusual noises, shift with a delay, or have difficulty shifting gears, your gearbox may need repair.

Timely transmission diagnostics allow you to detect and eliminate small faults before they become serious problems. This helps to avoid expensive repairs, extends the life of the transmission and improves the safety of the car. If the gearbox is not working properly, it can affect the performance of the entire vehicle and even cause additional damage to the engine.
