What is Powershift?
Powershift is a dual-clutch gearbox (similar to DSG) that provides fast and efficient gear changes. It consists of two clutches – one for odd gears, the other for even gears. This allows for seamless shifting during traction.
How is Powershift repaired?
This transmission requires a careful approach and qualified repair:
- Diagnostics – checks the control unit, clutch operation, pressure and oil condition.
- Disassembly and troubleshooting – checks the clutch kit, mechatronics, bearings and oil pump.
- Clutch replacement – often necessary after 100,000 km.
- Mechatronics repair – a sensitive component that often causes malfunctions.
- Oil change – special Powershift oil, very important for proper operation.
- Adjustment and final inspection – checking the gearbox in test mode and adjusting it to the car.
Most common problems:
- Shaking or vibrating when starting
- Jerking or hesitation when shifting
- Clutch wear
- Mechatronics failures
- Warning signals or “limp mode”
Technical disadvantages:
- Very sensitive to incorrect oil or wear and tear
- Frequent wear of mechatronics and clutches
- Not suitable for aggressive driving
- Repair is relatively expensive
Where is the Powershift gearbox installed?
- Ford (Focus, Mondeo, Kuga, S-Max)

Approximate costs for Powershift gearbox repairs:
