Continuously variable transmission (CVT) gearbox repair

A CVT, or continuously variable transmission, is a type of automatic transmission that does not have traditional gears. Instead, it uses two conical pulley systems and a metal or rubber belt to continuously change gear ratios. This allows the engine to operate at its optimum efficiency, improving fuel economy and driving comfort.

How is a CVT gearbox repaired?

CVT repair is a complex process that requires special knowledge and equipment:

  • Diagnostics – electronic and mechanical error detection (codes, pressure, sensors).
  • Disassembly and troubleshooting – the transmission is disassembled, pulleys, belts, bearings, and valve block components are inspected.
  • Replacing pulleys and belts – most often it is the belt or pulleys that are damaged and require replacement.
  • Hydraulic system and electronics repair – checks and repairs the control unit, solenoids.
  • Oil change – CVT uses special oil that must be changed after repair.
  • Adjustment and final diagnostics – the gearbox is adjusted to the vehicle and tested in driving mode.

Most common problems:

  • Slipping or jerking when accelerating
  • Hissing or buzzing sounds
  • Overheating
  • Warning lights on the dashboard
  • Delay in shifting or loss of power

Technical disadvantages:

  • Sensitivity to oil quality and volume
  • Rapid wear of pulleys and belts
  • Expensive spare parts and repairs
  • Cannot withstand heavy loads or sporty driving

Popular manufacturers that use CVTs:

  • Nissan (X-Trail, Qashqai, Altima)
  • Subaru (Forester, Outback)
  • Toyota (Corolla, Prius, C-HR)
  • Honda (Civic, CR-V)
  • Mitsubishi (ASX, Outlander)

Approximate CVT repair costs:

The price of CVT repair ranges from €900 to €2500, depending on the extent of the damage. In some cases, replacing the variator is more cost-effective than a complete repair.

If you feel a vibration, hear unusual noises, shift with a delay, or have difficulty shifting gears, your gearbox may need repair.

Timely transmission diagnostics allow you to detect and eliminate small faults before they become serious problems. This helps to avoid expensive repairs, extends the life of the transmission and improves the safety of the car. If the gearbox is not working properly, it can affect the performance of the entire vehicle and even cause additional damage to the engine.
