Tesla Transmission Repair

Tesla cars do not have the classic automatic transmission of internal combustion engine cars. The electric motors use a single-stage direct drive gearbox that does not require gear changes while driving.

What is the Tesla transmission?

  • Single-speed fixed gear ratio – all models (Model S, 3, X, Y).
  • The electric motor is directly connected to the wheels through a reduction mechanism.
  • Some models have two or four electric motors (AWD or Plaid), each with its own reduction gear.

Does your Tesla transmission need repair?

  • Regular maintenance is not required because the transmission has no clutches, solenoids, or multi-stage mechanism.
  • Oil change in the gearbox – possible after long-term use (for example, 100,000–200,000 km).
  • Gearbox leaks are rare, but can occur due to impacts or wear of seals.
  • Damage to bearings, shafts or gears – very rare, usually under aggressive loads.

The most common problems (related to the drivetrain, not the classic transmission):

  • Gearbox noise during acceleration (on some models, such as Model 3 Performance).
  • Rear or front motor defect (Drive Unit).
  • Driveshaft issues – especially on Model S and X at full throttle.
  • Damage to the inverter or electronics that control the motor.

Technical disadvantages:

  • There is no classic gearbox, but the reducer requires precise installation.
  • Noise or vibration may indicate a mechanical or electrical motor problem.
  • Parts are expensive because they are specific and available mainly at Tesla authorized service centers.

Approximate repair costs:

  • Gearbox oil change: €200–400
  • Drive Unit replacement or repair: €3000–7000
  • Shaft or bearing repair: €800–2000
  • Electronics (inverter) repair: €2000–5000+

Frequently asked questions

The approximate gearbox repair time is 1 week.

If you feel a vibration, hear unusual noises, shift with a delay, or have difficulty shifting gears, your gearbox may need repair.

Timely transmission diagnostics allow you to detect and eliminate small faults before they become serious problems. This helps to avoid expensive repairs, extends the life of the transmission and improves the safety of the car. If the gearbox is not working properly, it can affect the performance of the entire vehicle and even cause additional damage to the engine.

Yes, gearboxes also require maintenance.
It includes:

  1. General diagnosis of the condition.
  2. Oil and filter change (depending on manufacturer recommendations, usually every 60,000–100,000 km).
  3. Transmission cooling system inspection.

Absolutely. After an initial diagnosis, we explain the necessary work and provide a transparent cost estimate. We only start work after your approval.
