Volvo cars use different types of automatic transmissions, depending on the model and year. The most common are the Aisin classic automatic transmissions and in some models also the Powershift dual-clutch transmissions.
What is a Volvo automatic transmission?
- Aisin automatic transmissions with torque converter (most S60, XC60, V70, etc.)
- Powershift dual-clutch transmissions (some models, e.g. S40, V50, C30)
- Geartronic – Volvo's name for Aisin automatic transmissions with manual shift function.
How is the repair going?
- Diagnostics – checks electronics, hydraulics and mechanical components.
- Disassembly and troubleshooting – identifies worn parts: clutches, friction, solenoids.
- Hydraulic block repair – a common fault in improper shifting.
- Oil change – very important for Aisin and Powershift transmissions.
- Clutch replacement (in case of Powershift).
- Adjustment – electronic adjustment of the transmission after repair.
The most common problems:
- Kicks when switching
- Slipping or hesitating
- Oil leaks
- Electronics malfunction
- Powershift – shaking, clutch wear
Technical disadvantages:
- Aisin – sensitive to overheating and oil quality
- Powershift – complex and expensive maintenance, frequent clutch wear
- Insufficient maintenance leads to expensive repairs
Approximate repair costs:
- Oil change (Aisin/Geartronic): €250–400
- Hydraulic unit repair: €800–1400
- Powershift clutch replacement: €900–1600
- Full repair: €1,500–3,000
